Most of the programs are designed to serve the children of prisoners, because about 50 percent of the male prisoners and 70 percent of the female prisoners in the United States have children under 18 years of age. Private family visit programs are operating in seven states as well as Canada and Mexico. The articles review these programs and present a detailed overview of the Family Reunion Program of the New York State Department of Correctional Services.
