Abstract
The development of mediation, its organizational structure, and its place within the context of the legal system of the United Kingdom are discussed, and the principles of conciliation are outlined. Brief mention is made of key developments, with particular reference to their influence on the emergence of conciliation in separation and divorce as a method of intervention. This is illustrated by a brief description of the Conciliation Service at the Institute of Family Therapy (London). Finally, conciliation, psychotherapy and family therapy are differentiated and compared. (Author abstract)
