A needs assessment conducted in Nevada County, Calif., has identified the county's jail needs and options for reducing overcrowding.
Abstract
Data on inmate characteristics, classification, population, and flow formed the basis of the 1987 analysis. Subcommittees examined alternatives to incarceration, the needs of the mentally ill, and methods of handling public inebriates. The full advisory committee chose to reduce projected demand by implementing new and expanded alternatives to custody. The Advisory decided to seek funds to build a 100-200 bed main jail around an expandable core. Careful management of the jail population and alternatives since the 1983 needs assessment has reduced projected demands for future bed space. The county plans to continue this careful management while planning for future bed needs by providing a modern and effective corrections system through the construction of a new and potentially expandable main jail. Data tables and appended inspection reports and related materials.
