Sixteen chapters by criminal justice experts focus on aggregate crime trends in Australia, aspects of specific offenses in Australia, and the structure and operations of Australian criminal justice system components.
Abstract
After discussing the inadequacies and strengths of Australia's criminal statistics, the opening chapter analyzes the short-term and long-term crime patterns and compares them with other western industrialized democracies. The nature of and criminal justice response to crimes discussed in separate chapters cover sexual assault, corporate crime, medical fraud, terrorism, public disorder, and organized crime. A chapter compares racially based and minority-based police brutality in South Africa, Northern Ireland, and Australia. A review of Australian criminological research on females and crime addresses women as offenders and victims, the criminal justice system's treatment of women, and historical studies of female offenders. The extent of crime and criminal victimization among foreign-born persons in Australia is considered in another chapter. Topics discussed in the remaining chapters are perspectives on juvenile crime and justice, the police role in public debates on criminal justice issues, sentencing, prisons, alternatives to imprisonment, victimology, and criminal justice reform.
