The JAB community relations approach focuses on cooperation with other community agencies in working with at-risk youth and their families in early intervention efforts. The JAB is more interested in meeting the child's needs than in applying sanctions for law violations. A police-school liaison unit within the JAB fosters close cooperation between the police and school staffs. School-related police programs include the provision of an officer to provide services to a particular school requesting such services; assistance for a program that teaches children about self-protective behaviors; the sponsoring of a Safety House Program, which designates 'safe' houses in neighborhoods where children may seek safety; and the provision of a training course for police that prepares them to communicate with juveniles and act as a liaison between police and the schools. Future preventative policing may involve more proactive efforts by police; the establishing of a school program for children at risk of delinquency; the analysis of juvenile crimes through computer mapping; and police participation in Health, Education and Welfare Committees which coordinate services for children in the schools.
