This publication presents 87 articles related to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) which have appeared in the 'Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report,' published by the Centers for Disease Control, for June 1981 through May 1986.
Abstract
The articles, arranged in chronological order, track the reporting of information on AIDS from 1981, when the Centers for Disease Control first published information on Kaposi's sarcoma and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia occurring in young homosexual men. In 1981, the Centers for Disease Control established risk factors, conducted laboratory studies, and disseminated timely information on the disease now known as AIDS. The articles cover progress in knowledge about the scope, transmission, and risk factors pertaining to AIDS. Articles cover the existence of AIDS-related diseases among Haitians in the United States, among homosexuals, and among persons with hemophilia. Other groups discussed include the female sexual partners of males with AIDS, prison inmates, and intravenous drug abusers. Among other issues discussed are screening for the AIDS virus in donated blood and blood plasma; the spread of AIDS in Europe, Canada, the United States, and selected U.S. cities; behavioral changes required to reduce the risk of AIDS; and recommendations for preventing AIDS infection in various risky circumstances.
