This packet of information, developed by a Task Force on Sports Initiatives for Coaches in Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention, is intended for use by Maine high school athletic directors, coaches, and athletes.
Abstract
The packet contains some recommended school athletic policies and procedures that describe the role of coaches in preventing and intervening with alcohol and other drug use and abuse. It also has information on how to involve parents and team captains in the prevention efforts. The materials emphasize that coaches can make a significant impact on teams in schools when a policy exists that advocates that students seek out and get help for their chemical health problems. They also note that coaches are most effective in this effort in communities that plan and offer chemical-free events. Fact sheets, survey forms, discussion topics for school staff, sample letters to parents, and lists of printed and audiovisual resources.
