In September 1987, the Michigan State Police (MSP) tested 10 new patrol vehicles as part of their procurement policy.
Abstract
Each vehicle was subjected to six major types of tests. Results are weighed to reflect the relative importance of each attribute as related to MSP operational requirements. These tests include vehicle dynamics, acceleration, top speed, braking, ergonomics and communication, and fuel economy. The MSP scores each vehicle's overall performance, reviews the manufacturer's bid prices, and calculates a final composite score. Each vehicle was driven at least 15 timed laps by at least 3 drivers. Vehicles tested included the 5.7 and 4.3 liter (L) Chevrolet Caprice; the 2 and 4 barrel, 5.2 L Dodge Diplomat; the 5.8 and 5 L Ford Crown Victoria; the automatic and 5-speed, 5 L Ford Mustang; and the 2 and 4 barrel, 5.2 L Plymouth Gran Fury. Results of these tests are provided in tabular form, together with a description of the test methodology and objectives. 6 tables.
