This manual guides juvenile correctional facility administrators in using mini-lectures to teach their staffs about facility policies and procedures.
Abstract
The manual is keyed to the American Correctional Association's 'Guidelines for the Development of Policies and Procedures for Juvenile Detention Facilities.' The manual has selected 10 samples from the 'Guidelines' as examples of a structured and effective training format for all the guidelines. Since policies and procedures will vary among facilities, administrators are expected to adapt the sample models to their own facilities. The manual first describes the mini-lecture format, which can range from 10 minutes to 1 hour. Components of the mini-lecture are an introduction, content, summary, and evaluation (written test). Topics covered in the examples are facility establishment and mission delineation, juvenile fund accounts, personal property, searches of juveniles, searches of various locations, juveniles' legal rights, grievance procedure, ombudsperson, recreation, and visiting. Each example follows the component format of the mini-lecture. A starter kit contains sample forms for the trainer.
