The Alcohol and Drug Education Program (ADAEP) has developed a national training and resource system that includes five regional training centers, a national data base, and a program support project based on an innovative school team approach.
Abstract
Underlying this approach are these premises: schools are responsible for solving local problems, a cooperative systems managment approach to needs assessment and plan development and implementation will be the most effective approach, a variety of programs and services are necessary, and parental involvement is necessary for effective solutions of student problems. The national office formulates policy, program direction, leadership, staff training, and funding and monitoring of the national delivery system. The national program has established teams of school-community personnel with training and followup assistance, including onsite support, in every State and territory. Teams in 5,000 communities involve about 18,000 personnel and reach about 1,000,000 youth annually. Schools have found the program most effective in reducing behavior problems of all kinds, including drug and alcohol abuse. Programs vary according to local needs and resources. Components of such programs have included student awareness activities, parent workshops, recreation centers, support groups, discipline plans, student and staff assistance programs, and skills training.
