The program, operational in 19 correctional facilities, is a major component of the new shock incarceration camps for selected young offenders. Under the supervision of a correctional officer role model, inmates conduct a variety of peer counseling activities. In addition, individual contracts developed by each inmate specify behavior and attitude changes to be made while in the program. Daily community meetings focus on decisionmaking, life skills, communications, human relations, and group process. Participants were followed up for a minimum of 12 months. The return rate for satisfactory participants (24.5 percent) was considerably less than that for unsatisfactory participants (37.1 percent). It was also lower than the projected return rate of 35.9 percent. Results suggest that satisfactory program participation is positively related to postrelease adjustment as measured by return to correctional custody. Appendix and 3 tables.
