This paper reviews available studies that note the frequency of different sexual acts and reports additional information gathered during review of victim descriptions in presentence evaluation of 229 admitted child molesters.
Abstract
The study subjects were among 611 cases referred to the Intensive Treatment Program for Sexual Aggressives (ITPSA) at the Minnesota Security Hospital at St. Paul between July 1, 1975, and September 15, 1984. Of the total, 2 female offenders were eliminated as were 38 repeat evaluations and 3 cases where life history information had been misplaced. Of the remaining cohort of 568 cases, 229 of them were offenders of children less than 14 years of age. The data file included more than 50 variables per subject. To determine the validity of the sample of offenders, comparisons were made with Minnesota Crime Commission statistics on characteristics of all individuals convicted of sex offenses, and with a similar study wherein data were gathered at the point of prosecution. Analysis showed that the sample of subjects reflected statewide experience except that the recidivism history among these men was somewhat higher than usual for felony convictions. Findings are described in detail. Tabular data and 26 references.
