Seven articles describe drug law enforcement and drug prevention programs in various U.S. States, and a portion of one article outlines drug law enforcement efforts in Canada.
Abstract
The program to eradicate both cultivated and uncultivated marijuana growing in Indiana fields has significantly reduced the uncultivated supply and forced growers to grow their marijuana plants in greenhouses. The Inglewood Narcotics Task Force (California), which operated from May through August 1986, succeeded in significantly reducing robberies in targeted districts through aggressive drug enforcement that removed drug dealers and users from the streets. Texans' War on Drugs, federally funded and State administered since its inception in 1979, has had dramatic effects by focusing on drug legislation, law enforcement, and preventive education. The Illinois State Police drug interdiction program is part of an integrated, across-the-board attack on substance abuse. The program's central theme is the interdiction of drugs in quantity prior to street distribution. In response to the shift of the flow of cocaine from the East Coast to the West Coast, particularly into the Los Angeles area, the Los Angeles Police Department has launched a comprehensive narcotics enforcement program and a plan to prevent police corruption associated with drug trafficking. The Southern Pacific Railroad is one of the first large companies in the United States to decide that drug testing in certain situations could be a deterrent to employee drug and alcohol abuse. Canadian law enforcement believes that the war on drugs is enhanced by the optimal use of computers in storing and analyzing intelligence data. For individual articles, see NCJ-111728-111733.
