After discussing the importance of conflict-resolution skills for effective correctional officer functioning, a draft syllabus in conflict resolution skills is provided for prison officials.
Abstract
Conflict resolution skills are fundamental in the development of mature and effective corrections officers and in their experience of job satisfaction. An outline for training corrections personnel in conflict resolution might cover negotiation skills, third-party mediation, how to map the conflict, 'win-win' resolutions, option development, power relationships, management of emotions, willingness to resolve problems, appropriate assertiveness, empathy, creative response, and broadening perspectives. The draft syllabus first defines what each of the foregoing dimensions of conflict resolution involves, then lists the staff attitudes and practical methods which facilitate the implementation of each conflict-resolution dimension. Conflict-resolution training opportunities should allow for the cross fertilization of staff at different levels of the correctional hierarchy, which suggests joint training for all levels of prison staff. Interaction between treatment officers and custodial staff is particularly important.
