Established in October 1985, the FSIRS provides information to laboratories that facilitates evidentiary examinations and the research and development of forensic science knowledge, techniques, and instrumentation. The FSIRS consists of approximately 10,000 scientific and technical reference books, the vast majority of which are housed in the unit laboratories and offices of the FBI Laboratory Division. The FSIRS subscribes to over 350 journals. Subject bibliographies are prepared by the FSIRS to augment the feature articles in the FBI's quarterly 'Crime Laboratory Digest.' The FSIRS also provides literature searching services and document delivery services to crime laboratories upon written request. The FBI Laboratory Division contains four sections: Document Section, Forensic Science Research and Training Center, Scientific Analysis Section, and Special Projects Section. A brief description of each section and examples of reference requests illustrates how the FSIRS meets forensic science information needs.
