This booklet discusses the rationale and techniques for business involvement in crime prevention education, primarily through employee crime prevention education and services.
Abstract
A business' provision of crime prevention services to employees can enhance worksite security, improve employee morale and the corporate image, increase productivity, and reduce lost work time that may result from employees' criminal victimization. Employee crime prevention services that may be provided are short training sessions on crime prevention, the distribution of crime prevention literature, the publishing of crime prevention articles and tips, stimulation of employee participation in Operation Identification, and crime prevention displays and film fairs. Other employee crime prevention services include a business' bulk purchase of security and fire safety equipment for resale to employees at below retail prices, services by law enforcement crime prevention officers, services for employee crime victims, and an incentive program to encourage crime prevention suggestions from employees. A business can contribute to community crime prevention by encouraging employees to participate in neighborhood watch and other community programs, by providing crime prevention program resources to the community, by donating obsolete equipment, assisting police in the development of crime prevention committees, and assisting in crime prevention funding. The booklet briefly describes examples of business crime prevention services in Virginia. Program resource descriptions.
