Abstract
Individual papers identify current trends that will affect law enforcement in the rest of the century, describe the use of computer technology in law enforcement, and evaluate projects designed to target career criminals and to reduce fear of crime. Additional articles examine police behavior in traffic stops and disturbances, decisionmaking regarding high-speed chases, the process of decertification as a means of handling police misconduct, and the nature of current police training. Further papers focus on the roles and adaptations of female police officers, the correlates of police cynicism, the work of the Royal Ulster Constabulary in dealing with terrorism and riots in Northern Ireland, the use of civilian volunteers in a police agency, and the task of involving police in work with a civilian human service agencies.
