Two articles describe exit/entry and personal identification systems. Automated fingerprint identification has been used for tracking inmates, visitors, and employees and for recordkeeping and recording. Eyeprint identification has been used from booking of suspects through prelease administration. Descriptions also are provided of several computerized security systems, including electronic control systems for use on correctional officer rounds and comprehensive, centralized systems that can control everything from lighting and locks to surveillance and communication systems. These are particularly suited to use in the open new-generation facility designs. Security issues and provisions in Ohio prisons are considered in the context of the State's facility design prototype. An interview with warden discusses security at the level-6 Federal penitentiary in Marion, Ill.; and describes the facility's stratified inmate management system. Also highlighted are purchasing high-technology security systems; security issues related to design, engineering, lighting, and maintenance; trends in juvenile detention facilities; and management strategies for terrorist inmates. Additional articles examine use-of-force firearms training, inmate litigation, restitution programs, victim/witness liaison, and the history of Alcatraz Prison.
