This analysis of the 1985 negotiation between the Detroit Edison Company and its subsidiary, Syndeco, Inc. (on a business plan and contract for meter reading services) shows the usefulness of integrative analytical assessment (IAA) procedures in assisting parties to assess and analyze information that can generate agreements.
Abstract
In the IAA the social process perspective is integrated with formal analytical methods, and the IAA emphasizes 'win-win' rather than 'win-lose' negotiations. In the case examined, the IAA consisted of an eight-stage approach. It involved initial contact and orientation, qualitative assessment and description, structuring the situation, analytical formulation, quantitative assessment of interests and outcomes, integration of quantitative data for evaluation, analysis and interpretation, and the communication of findings and results. The IAA enhanced cooperation between the parties, encouraged the parties to set aside their current positions and begin negotiation anew, and improved communication between the parties. Although the negotiation did not yield a solution to the dispute, it demonstrated that joint gains could be made through cooperation. 2 notes and 23 references.
