An Addiction Research Foundation (ARF) study group recommends the implementation of employee drug screening under certain conditions.
Abstract
This paper argues that this would be an unwise thing to do. Four reasons for opposing the implementation of this program are identified. The most important of these is the failure of ARF researchers to provide evidence linking employee drug use with occupational health and safety. This makes their best advice, poor advice. The remaining three reasons for opposing the drug screening program are unintended consequences that make things worse, a corporate bias that amplified employer power without any significant gain in occupational health and safety, and a historical bias that does little to change or to modify the harm that societal reactions to drug use and abuse have caused in Canada since the turn of the century.
