This article discusses the Connecticut State Police Department's canine arson accelerant training program and the performance of a black Labrador retriever who came through the program.
Abstract
Traditional Pavlovian conditioning techniques used to 'imprint' the dog, Mattie, with accelerant odors are discussed. Identification of samples to be taken for laboratory analysis is described as one of the advantages of using Mattie the 'arson dog.' Products of pyrolysis and accelerants that the dog can identify are listed, and examples are given of the dog's performance in recognizing scents at fire scenes.
