The Florida Task Force on AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) presents AIDS-related recommendations in the areas of public health, public education, patient services, and research and epidemiology.
Abstract
The task force believes there is sufficient epidemiologic evidence about AIDS to resolve uncertainties about appropriate public protection in schools, the workplace, and elsewhere. Until an immunization or treatment is developed through additional research, the only effective means of preventing the spread of the AIDS virus is through education about the sexual and drug use practices implicated in AIDS transmission. For those infected with AIDS, additional resources are needed for their care and treatment. Regarding a public health policy, the task force recommends the State adopt a policy toward school children with AIDS identical to that proposed by the Florida Medical Association and the Centers for Disease Control. It recommends against the routine screening of low risk populations. Recomendations for public education include the development of training packages tailored to the needs of various groups, including health care providers, school personnel, criminal justice personnel, high-risk groups, and the general public. Recommendations also encompass improved medical services for AIDS patients. Appended supplementary material.
