Brief outlines of major policy issues are presented, together with sample policies on discrimination, AIDS in correctional facilities, and AIDS risk reduction for health care workers and first responders (police and fire department personnel and emergency medical service providers). In addition to covering AIDS prevention and infection control procedures, policies discuss such issues as AIDS testing, counseling and education, and rights of seropositive individuals, including confidentiality. In general, policies include general information on AIDS, how it is and is not spread, how to avoid contracting the disease, and resources to contact for additional information. Policies for service providers include explanations of on-the-job situations in which precautions should be taken and procedures to be followed if an on-job exposure is suspected, including incident reporting and followup testing.
