The agency said that the prison did not provide appropriate instruction and training for employees in the recognition and avoidance of hazards associated with blood-borne diseases, including AIDS and hepatitis B. The prison has now developed a lesson plan to supplement the current training programs at the State's prisons. The State has also cited the prison for failing to record a detailed summary of occupational injuries and illnesses and for not ensuring the use of proper gloves when employees are potentially exposed to blood. Correctional officers have now received pouches to be worn on their belts and to contain gloves. The citations were issued in response to a complaint filed by an official of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees. The complaint alleged possible employee exposure to communicable diseases.
