The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) serves as the National focal point for putting crime prevention know-how to work in communities across the country.
Abstract
The National Citizens Crime Prevention Campaign, backed by a 118 organization coalition of private and public agencies and associations, has worked through mass media public education to increase public awareness. The NCPC builds upon that awareness by providing tools that States and communities can use to develop programs to meet their specific crime prevention needs. The NCPC has developed materials that enable local groups to take action, has devised training that empowers practitioners and citizens to make the most of their partnerships, has developed the world's largest crime prevention program data base and library, and has created and sustained a network for disseminating crime prevention information. NCPC materials include a variety of formats depending on the audience, purpose, and objectives. Subjects range from child protection to safety for senior citizens, from community organization against crime to business action to prevent crime losses. Included are crime prevention kits, books, posters, and newsletters. The NCPC also offers workshops for law enforcement and citizen leaders on such topics as planning and managing crime prevention, data collection and analysis, and youth programming. State associations and programs in the Crime Prevention Coalition localize activities and provide their own in-State training and networks. While the NCPC can provide the tools, communities must provide the creativity and commitment. 3 footnotes.
