The reasons for and process of investigation or foster home placement are explained, and definitions are provided of the types of abuse/neglect handled by DSS. The role of the DSS caseworker, the guardian ad litem and lawyer, the police, and the solicitor are described. The people who will be at the court hearing are listed, and simple rules for behavior in court are presented. The procedures used in providing testimony are explained, and the importance that the child victim-witness be open and truthful is emphasized. The difference between a founded and an unfounded case is discussed. The judge's decision in founded cases is discussed in terms of the need to stop the abuse and help the family. Dispositional alternatives such as casework, counseling, or separation from the family are described. It is noted that in some cases an agreement may be reached so that the child will not have to go to court.
