This chapter provides descriptions of community crime prevention and police-community relations programs in Canada targeted toward children and adolescents.
Abstract
Each description specifies the title or subject, program purpose and objectives, program operations or activities, and (for some) program outcomes. Recreational programs include a Big Brothers superstar event, a boys' club, an outdoor education program, and Halloween programs. Several programs focus on delinquency prevention, including a police-youth relations program, a peer counseling project, a skills training program (Operation Aware), a return-to-school program, and the Juvenile Offenders Information Center. Let's Share is designed to promote community assistance to handicapped and emotionally troubled juveniles. Three police-school programs provide information to children in Grades 1 through 12 on a variety of subjects, including the police role, personal safety, Canadian law, bicycle safety, child molestation, vandalism, safe driving, juvenile delinquency, and drug and alcohol abuse. Finally, several programs feature drug and alcohol education and abuse prevention. These include Students Against Drunk Driving, poster campaigns, and an alcohol/drug-free graduation campaign.
