This report highlights achievements of New York State's Systems Improvements for Enhanced Community Safety (SIFECS) program for 1986, and effort to reform, automate, and integrate criminal justice information at the state and local levels.
Abstract
The developmental history and goals of SIFECS are reviewed. The report surveys progress achieved in several key areas: standardization of data collection forms, internal procedures, and data definitions; automation at all levels of State and local criminal justice systems; enhanced data communications; and accurate and timely information. The final section explains individual systems that SIFECS is expected to develop and when they might be operational. These include automated booking and exchange of warrant data, incident and arrest case tracking, and a system that reflects an individual's current status within the State criminal justice system. Highlights of progress achieved since 1985 when large implementation projects began cover on a fingerprint identification system, a microcomputer based jails management system, a daily population count system, and technological improvements that form the basis for future progress.
