This report highlights achievements of New York State's Systems Improvements for Enhanced Community Safety (SIFECS) program for 1987, an effort to reform, automate, and integrate criminal justice information at the state and local levels.
Abstract
Major initiatives launched in 1987 are highlighted, including the introduction of research and policy planning as a major SIFECS program area and development of a disaster recovery plan. In addition, automation efforts at State agencies reached a level of development where SIFECS funding was no longer critical. The report surveys major accomplishments, such as selecting vendors to supply hardware for the automated fingerprint identification system and expanding the warrant history and jails management systems. Following a brief history of the SIFECS program, the report details its accomplishments in several areas: standardization, automation at State and local levels, communications, timely and accurate data, and research and policy planning. The final section explains how SIFECS is meeting the longer term information needs of law enforcement, case disposition, and corrections.
