These guidelines are for physicians in providing patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), and AIDS-related complex with the support and information needed to bridge the gap between diagnosis and the point at which referral for specialized services and counseling may become necessary.
Abstract
Most of the counseling guidelines provided apply to patients having positive HIV antibody tests with or without symptoms. Effective counseling steps include reassurance, education, and instruction. The central point in reassurance is to inform the patient that a positive HIV antibody test does not mean the patient has or will necessarily ever develop AIDS. Another aspect of reassurance is to ensure patients that their medical records are confidential. Educational material should cover who the virus can affect, how and by whom it is transmitted, the passing of the HIV from mothers to children during pregnancy, and the controlling of potential exposure to the HIV. Instruction should detail how the HIV is transmitted and clarify the patient's responsibility to others. Instruction should also inform the patient about how to maintain physical health and comply with safe sexual practices. 4 references and 7-item bibliography.
