This study used 129 inmates released from the Alabama Department of Corrections in 1983 to measure the relationship between correctional post-secondary education and recidivism.
Abstract
The study subjects were randomly selected from 3,071 inmates released in 1983 who had attended correctional post-secondary education and an equal number of qualified nonparticipants. Both groups were studied concerning variables such as months of successful release time, types of offenses, number of prior incarcerations, and length of most recent prior incarceration. Other variables included level of most recent prior incarceration, age at first arrest, educational background, number of classes attended, and recidivism. The data were submitted to descriptive and inferential analyses. The inferential data were examined using a multiple linear regression analysis technique. Findings show a statistically significant but small relationship between correctional post-secondary education and low recidivism. The relationship between the dependent variables were found to be nonsignificant, while participation in correctional post-secondary education was the delineating variable.
