This document provides abstracts of key sections of the 'Training Curriculum on Suicide Detection and Prevention in Jails and Lockups,' developed by the Jail Suicide Prevention Information Task Force.
Abstract
The training manual is designed for use in jails and lockups. It provides personnel with information on why jail environments are conducive to suicidal behavior, including its authoritarian, shaming, isolating, and dehumanizing aspects. Factors that may predispose an inmate to suicide (e.g., substance use, recent loss, mental illness) and periods during case processing when suicide risk is heightened are identified. Also covered are suicide warning symptoms and signs such as intoxication, depression, and history of mental illness or previous attempts. Also included are guidelines for intake screening that include assessment of suicidal behavior, physical injury or trauma, chronic or acute mental illness, medication and special health requirements, and intoxication. A model developed for use in New York State provides for assessment based on observations of the transporting officers, as well as intake personal data and appearance and behavior. A model disposition and referral checklist is included, and State incidence data on inmate suicides in 1985 and 1986 are presented.
