This article describes research projects aimed at improving the operational efficiency of the English prison system, particularly with respect to long-term and mentally disordered inmates.
Abstract
Four studies have been undertaken on management and control of long-term prisoners. The first is a literature review of the prison environment factors that assist in or militate against the maintenance of control. The second project is monitoring special units for long-term inmates who represent serious control problems. It will include a descriptive account of events, psychological evaluation of the inmates, and key features of each unit. Another study is examining two special security units, with focus on the regimes, control strategies, inmate-staff relations, and effects of the units on the prison. A final study is examining the nature of control problems and the manner in which they emerge. Three studies are examining management of mentally disordered inmates. These include an examination of the population, regime, and inmate and staff social relations and attitudes at the Grendon psychiatric prison; a profile of the prison population in terms of types of disorders and treatment implications; and a literature review of suicide and attempted suicide in prisons. Additional projects are examining prison operations, prison design, case management of young offenders, and the impact of mother-child units. 5 references.
