Agencies considered include the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCSJ), the Division of State Police, the Department of Correctional Services, the State Commission of Correction (SCOC), the Division of Probation and Correctional Alternatives (DPCA), the Division of Parole, the Crime Victims Board (CVB), and the Division of Youth. Of these agencies only four expressed concerns over their reporting requirements and offered suggestions for legislative changes. Three main categories of reports are produced by those criminal justice agencies: annual reports, routine statistical and research reports, and one-time special project reports. DCJS was the agency most impacted by legislative requests for information, producing 13 reports. CVB, the smallest agency, was required to produce four reports, while remaining agencies produced only one or two reports. Most agencies are mandated to report annually, to produce reports internally, and to consider the reports useful and worth the resources required. Major recommendations included closer coordination between the Legislature and agencies, greater clarity and methodological soundness in reporting laws, reduced frequency of reporting, increased funding for special studies, and increased interagency communication to reduce duplication of effort.
