This article discusses the Life Skills training program for 360 first felony offenders aged 14 to 24 at the Hillsborough Correctional Institution (HI.CI) in Balm, Florida. It covers problem areas, techniques used, and an evaluation of its effectiveness.
Abstract
The Life Skills Program consists of 6 training modules designed to meet the needs of inmates at different states of their incarceration from reception through parole supervision. The reception module introduces new inmates to the program as they go through the induction process upon entering the correctional institution. The overview module, which is presented in the first 6 months of inmates' incarceration, consists of 7 units designed to enhance 10 life skills. These include developing self-assessment ability, understanding principles of motivation, personal value clarification, developing personal responsibility, and describing and understanding personal feeling. Other topics include portraying one's real self, handling changes in behavior, developing personal communication skills, giving and receiving feedback, and setting personal goals. The 4 other modules in the program focus on goal setting attainment, employability, personal planning, and stress management.
