After profiling types of shoplifters, shoplifting methods, and suspicious behavior characteristic of shoplifters, this article suggests how to deter, apprehend, and interrogate shoplifters.
Abstract
Some deterrence suggestions are good and prompt service by clerks, limiting the amount of merchandise taken into the fitting room, watching for customers who take obviously wrong-sized clothing into fitting rooms, and posting security officers or clerks at the entrance to fitting rooms. The fitting rooms should be near the center of the store and away from exits, stairways, and aisles. Apprehension involves seeing the suspect take an item and conceal it, knowing where the stolen item is on the shoplifter, and seeing the suspect fail to pay for what has been concealed. The purpose of interrogation is to recover the merchandise and obtain the shoplifter's oral and written admission. Suggestions are offered for dealing with adult and juvenile shoplifters.
