This article reports the results of a 1987 survey of security directors and managers who are members of the American Society for Industrial Security to determine their annual income.
Abstract
As of December 1987, 979 questionnaires had been returned, of which 844 were usable. Survey data encompass salaries and bonuses for 14 benchmark jobs in security and loss prevention by geographic area, type and size of employer, education and experience, and organizational level. This is the fifth annual survey of this kind. The respondents received a mean annual income of $40,902, up from $36,291 in 1985. Those who established policy for the security function had a mean income of $47,686 (with some having an annual income well over $125,000). Those who directed the security function but did not establish policy earned an average of $35,771. The most consistent determinant of salary for security directors and managers was the size of the employing organization. Other important determinants of salary were educational level, policymaking responsibilities, number of subordinates, and the metropolitan and geographic area. 4 exhibits.
