Abstract
This book is intended primarily for former drug users struggling to remain drugfree. The first chapters analyze drug effects and the dynamics of addiction, followed by a review of the reasons substance abusers do not get help. Suggestions are offered for guiding abusers into treatment. An overview of treatment approaches precedes the featured discussion of ways to remain drugfree after detoxification. Issues discussed include the 12-step approach of Alcoholics Anonymous, self-help support groups, nutrition, therapeutic communities (Forest Farm and Vision Quest), and support group therapy. The discussion of alternatives to drugs and alcohol focuses on the concepts and methods of Eastern religions and philosophies, including yoga, meditation, and enlightenment. Other topics considered are stress reduction, exercise, sleep, dream analysis and control, and the pursuit of creativity. Primary prevention through drug education for youth is briefly discussed in the concluding chapter. 175 item bibliography, subject index.
