The Journal of the AMA frequently contains articles relating to medical, legal, and social issues associated with the AIDS epidemic; and has published a book on AIDS that includes these articles. More than 30 reports have been prepared for dissemination that address and interpret the science of the disease, its progress, the AMA commitment to its control, and the professional and ethical responsibility of physicians in the AIDS crisis. In 1987, the House of Delegates adopted 17 recommendations dealing with guidance and public education, AIDS antibody testing, and surveillance and protection (including discrimination and confidentiality issues). Other actions have authorized the AMA to institute an AIDS public awareness and information program, address a variety of AIDS-related legal and ethical issues, provide assistance to States and concerned groups, identify risk factors and patient management policies, lobby for funding for AIDS education, and affirm AMA support for the dignity and self-respect of all patients. A report also has been completed on ethical issues in the treatment of seropositive individuals and physician seropositivity. Additional activities are planned for the future. 2 references.
