This videotape describes the Mississippi Department of Youth Services' (DYS) Cadet Achievement Program (CAP), a paramilitary program that uses a 'boot camp' philosophy with selected first-time juvenile offenders.
Abstract
An overview of CAP's goals emphasizes developing self-discipline, improving self-image, and instilling respect for the generally accepted moral attitudes and value systems of society. The program accepts 25 juvenile offenders each at two campuses. Participation is voluntary, and offenders spend 10 weeks in CAP before they are released on parole. In addition to activities associated with basic military training such as building and grounds maintenance and marching, cadets participate in intensive counseling sessions, an academic program, and vigorous exercise. The videotape shows a typical day in the life of a cadet, from early morning exercise and clean-up chores through academic classes, meals, and uniform maintenance. Over the long term, DYS anticipates substantially reduced recidivism rates among CAP graduates.
