The volume begins with suggestions to assess school climate and how to address problem areas. It offers administrators and teachers guidelines for developing an effective school discipline plan. The next chapter examines the reasons students are absent and eventually drop out of school and gives strategies for increasing attendance. The third chapter focuses on personal safety and shows how schools can work in cooperation with parents, law enforcement, social service agencies, and other community members to promote the health and safety of children. The final chapter describes the roles of school law enforcement or campus security personnel and discusses other methods for making campuses physically safer. The text emphasizes the importance of keeping accurate data both to document problems and to promote effective decisionmaking. Charts, checklists, survey instruments, sample forms, model programs, appended security checklist, and 26 references.
