The future of personal identification was examined, with emphasis on its mandates, forms, applications, and impacts on law enforcement agencies.
Abstract
The analysis considered both the private and public marketplaces and their particular requirements and mandates for personal identification. It also examined the variety of technologies available to accomplish personal identification. This information was combined with an analysis of trends and events that would affect any future use of personal-identification technologies by national and California law enforcement. Two scenarios were developed, demonstrating our probable future reliance on computer systems technologies. The analysis concluded that public and private interests and applications of personal identification and information systems will remain separate for the foreseeable future. Appended journal articles and background information and 8 references.
