Interview and survey data reveal considerable consensus on future training needs. Areas involving tactical skills were rated consistently high for both patrol officers and supervisors. Field tactics, communications, firearms, and use of force also were highly rated. Skills necessary to supervise and manage emergency and disaster situations were rated highly for patrol supervisors. To meet these needs training programs should address the 'how to' or technical skills of officers and supervisors, with an emphasis on demonstrations and practical exercises to develop task-specific skills. An area in serious need of development is driver training. Additional training programs could cover accident investigation, traffic enforcement, dispatching, incident command, search and rescue operations, crime scene investigation, emergency medical services, hazardous spills management, report writing, and human relations. These skills should be integrated into a complete training system. Exercises, demonstration, and instruction would be structured to ensure that specific skills are taught, practiced, evaluated, and reinforced. Funding for a multipurpose training center is discussed, and the results of field trips to driver training ranges are provided. Figures and illustrations.
