The 1989 vehicles tested were the 5.7 liter (L) and 5L Chevrolet Caprice (V8) and the 4.3L Chevrolet Caprice (V6), the 5.2L Dodge Diplomat (V8, 2 and 4 barrel), the 5.8L and 5L Ford Crown Victoria (V8), the 5.2L Plymouth Gran Fury (V8, 2 and 4 barrel), and the 5L Ford Mustang (V8, 5-speed and automatic). Vehicle dynamics test examined high-speed pursuit handling characteristics and performance during a minimum of 12 timed laps by 3 drivers. Acceleration testing determined acceleration to 60, 80, and 100 miles per hour from a standing start, the vehicle's ability to attain a speed of 110 miles per hour within 2 miles, and the actual top speed attainable. Brake testing evaluated the acceptability of performance in pursuit service, including the ability to make a panic stop and for evidence of brake fade. Vehicles also were assessed for comfort and instrumentation and ability to accommodate communication and emergency warning equipment, and city fuel economy was estimated.
