This analysis of issues related to crime victims in Sweden concludes that wider support for crime victims should be provided mainly by reinforcing existing public services for people experiencing difficulties and that the police should devote more time and interest to crime victims.
Abstract
The report's four sections discuss the scope of the problem and general principles, victim reactions to crime and to the criminal justice system, the role of shelters for female victims of violence, and the international literature on mediation. Measures recommended by the National Council for Crime Prevention include making it easier for victims to receive compensation, improving communication and support for crime victims from the police, increasing funding along with continued voluntary support for women's shelters and other shelters for crime victims, and testing of mediation programs.
