This paper reviews the literature on elder abuse and efforts to deal with it and describes the programs and outcomes of three model projects in Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island.
Abstract
The projects all provide casework to abused and neglected people age 60 and over and to members of their families. The goal is to intervene in cases of maltreatment, to introduce services when appropriate, to counsel victims and relatives, and to help resolve conflicts between the abuser and the abused. The projects focused only on domestic abuse and neglect cases. Each program worked closely with a home health agency, a mental health counseling service, and a senior center. However, the programs differed in the strategies used to promote coordination and the extent of staff involvement in direct client services. The degree of involvement in direct client services appeared to affect the resolution of the cases. The project involving the most services was the least efficient, but its intensive efforts made it the most acceptable and satisfying approach in the views of its victims. Tables and 11 references.
