The origins of Hispanic and Latin American peoples are traced, the varying physical characteristics of various Hispanic groups are described, and their generally common language (Spanish) and religion (Roman Catholic) are noted. Values and concepts associated with Hispanic culture include family-centeredness, the importance of the extended family, paternal authority, traditional male and female roles, male machismo, and the importance of personal friendships. The concepts of self-pride, personal honor, and worth also are important. Hispanics tend to be openly communicative, more casual in their concept of time, and nationalistic. Hispanics include North Americans of Hispanic descent, citizens of a foreign country, legal residents, or undocumented aliens. Illegal aliens often are targeted by robbers and thieves and have a distrust of dealing with police. Helpful hints for police who work with Hispanics are offered.
