An appropriate education for each handicapped student between the ages of 3-21 years is mandated by Federal legislation, Public Law 94-142, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975. These educational services, including special education, must be provided in State-supported schools, which include facilities for adjudicated and incarcerated delinquents as well as adults. The New Mexico Boys' School is a State-supported school providing habilitation, training, education, and related services to approximately 250 adjudicated delinquents from throughout the State of New Mexico. The purpose of this article is to provide a description of the continuum of education services which has been designed and implemented to meet the needs of juvenile delinquents committed to a correctional facility. By describing this continuum of education programs, correctional education administrators in other facilities will be able to identify a model proven successful in diagnosing, placing and providing appropriate educational services to juvenile delinquents in a correctional facility.
