This transcript details a panel discussion on research carried out to assess a victim's psychological reactions to sexual assault.
Abstract
Many women have reactions to assault that last for long periods of time; these reactions have been characterized as post-traumatic stress syndrome. The panel also discussed the need for state and community support for child sexual assault services, focusing on New Mexico statutes and statewide training for health and law enforcement professionals working in the area of sexual assault and abuse. Several participants reported on the victim/witness assistance programs they direct and identified the preparation of volunteers as a major concern. The panel also discussed the training of hospital emergency staff in crisis intervention, the work of sexual assault centers, and the issues of offender behavior and offender treatment. Individual presentations were followed by a question and answer period.
