The motivations, mental states, and methods used by serial killers are examined; and the potential of profiling systems for lessening serial murders, rapes, and other forms of extreme violence is discussed. Myths about rape are dispelled, and a profile is offered of how rapists operate before, during, and after their crime. Rape also is considered with respect to victim response, women's rights, AIDS, victims services, and prevention. Child sexual abuse (pedophilia, child sex rings, child pornography) also is examined, and guidelines for protecting children from abuse, assault, and kidnapping are provided. The extent and cyclical nature of family violence is elucidated, with focus on prevention, criminal justice system responses, and treatment of victims and abusers. Changing attitudes toward victims and related legislative reforms are reviewed, as are new crime control strategies emphasizing police-community cooperation. The utility of new forensic technologies and approaches to the investigation and prevention of violent crimes also is discussed.
